Joan of Arc Ascending

Written and Performed by Keir Cutler

Joan of Arc Ascending is a powerful solo theatrical work written and performed by veteran Fringe artist Keir Cutler. It tells the story of the legendary Joan of Arc, focusing on the miraculous aspects of her life and the mystery of her divine visions. The show premiered at the 2024 Winnipeg Fringe Festival and returned with a sold-out run at the 2025 Montreal Fringe Festival. It continues its success with a 2025 production at the Edmonton Fringe.

The performance combines gripping storytelling with live medieval music, featuring accomplished musicians such as Carson Sautner in Edmonton and Rebecca Bain in Montreal. These musical interludes enrich the atmosphere and transport the audience to the world of 15th-century France.

This is Keir Cutler’s twelfth original solo play. With Joan of Arc Ascending, he invites audiences to set aside rational skepticism and open themselves to the possibility of the miraculous.

Critical Acclaim

UMFM in Winnipeg called the show:

“A top-notch Fringe play. Well written, well performed, and absorbing from beginning to end… Don’t miss this show, it is a gem.”

Stuart Nulman’s Grapevine, Montreal Fringe 2025 wrote:

“The amazing Joan of Arc Ascending … sharp, energetic storytelling skills … Not only does Cutler keep the full house audience captivated by telling the heroic story of Joan of Arc, he is deftly accompanied by Rebecca Bain, who wonderfully sets the tone with performances of medieval music from Joan’s lifetime.”

Jim Burke, former Montreal Gazette theatre critic, Montreal Fringe 2025 observed:

“Keir Cutler's cracking one-man show Joan of Arc Ascending … He's accompanied by medieval music specialist Rebecca Bain who performs some absolutely gorgeous period songs … Given Cutler's status as a Fringe legend, plus the word of mouth about this particular show, most performances are very near sold out, so book in advance.”
